Fall is a useful time to review your Indianapolis home’s exterior and decide which areas need cleaning before winter. Start with visible buildup, the materials involved and any existing damage. A house wash can address cleaning needs, but it does not winterproof a home or replace repairs.

Use this checklist to plan the work with Indy Power Wash. Keep siding, concrete, wood and roof concerns separate so the estimate addresses the right surfaces and methods.

A Fall Exterior Walkthrough

  1. Look from ground level: Note dirty siding, recurring dark patches, stained steps and areas where leaves collect. Take photos to explain the locations when requesting an estimate.
  2. Record visible damage: Flag loose panels, peeling paint, open joints, damaged masonry and flaking concrete. Ask whether repairs or another assessment should happen before cleaning.
  3. Identify the materials: Find the siding brand, roof type and any deck or concrete coating information you have. Include previous cleaning or refinishing dates if known.
  4. Choose the scope: List the house walls, driveway, sidewalks, patio or fence you want assessed. Do not assume a house-washing quote includes every exterior surface.
  5. Plan access and timing: Mention gates, parked vehicles, outdoor furniture and access restrictions. Confirm preparation instructions and a suitable weather window before the appointment.

Match Fall Cleaning to the Surface

House Siding and Brick

Check the care instructions for your particular siding and finish. CertainTeed’s vinyl and polymer siding guidance describes hand cleaning and hose rinsing, and cautions against high pressure because it can cause damage or force water behind panels. A seasonal cleaning date does not make a more aggressive method appropriate.

For brick, the Brick Industry Association’s cleaning guidance calls for methods suited to the brick and manufacturer’s recommendations, with trial cleaning before wider application. Excessive pressure can damage brick, mortar or finishes. Describe stains and existing deterioration when discussing house washing.

Wood Siding, Fences and Decks

For wood siding, fencing or decks, identify the material, existing finish and visible condition before choosing a cleaning method. Our wood siding cleaning guide explains how to describe a maintenance-cleaning request and distinguish it from repair or refinishing work.

Include whether the wood is painted, stained or unfinished, and where the finish is peeling or worn. Cleaning and refinishing are different scopes; confirm the work included in your estimate before scheduling.

Driveways, Sidewalks and Patios

Describe leaf marks, general dirt and other stains when requesting surface cleaning. Mention coatings, recent concrete installation, cracks and flaking. Ask what can reasonably be cleaned and what needs separate attention.

The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s guidance on scaling explains that water-saturated concrete exposed to freezing and thawing can lose surface material. Concrete quality, installation, curing and deicing practices also matter. A fall wash should not be presented as a guarantee against winter damage.

Keep Roof Concerns Separate

Observe roof discoloration from the ground and report known leaks or damaged shingles. Asphalt shingles should not be treated like a concrete driveway: the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association warns against power washers, brushes and brooms for cleaning algae from asphalt shingles and advises following the shingle manufacturer’s recommendations.

Use our asphalt-shingle cleaning guide to describe your request. Cleaning is not roof repair, and ARMA notes that discoloration can return after treatment.

What to Confirm Before Booking

  • Included work: Agree on the surfaces, stains and areas covered by the estimate.
  • Method and products: Ask how the proposed treatment fits the material, finish and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Property preparation: Confirm what to move and how plants, outdoor items and access points will be handled.
  • Weather and scheduling: Ask which forecast or surface conditions would require rescheduling. Do not rely on a calendar month alone.

Our house-washing preparation checklist covers the details to discuss before a visit.

Fall Cleaning Questions

Is fall always better than spring?

The useful timing depends on the surface’s condition, its care instructions and suitable conditions for the work. Fall can be a planning checkpoint rather than an automatic appointment for every surface.

Will pressure washing stop freeze-thaw damage?

No. Cleaning does not establish that concrete or other materials are protected against freezing conditions. Report existing damage and discuss any repair needs separately.

Can every surface be cleaned the same way?

No. Siding, coated wood, masonry and asphalt shingles have different care requirements. Identify the material and finish before agreeing on a method.

Should I book another wash in spring?

Review the condition after winter rather than assuming two washes are required each year. Our house-washing maintenance guide explains how product instructions and current conditions inform a schedule.
