Wood decks: identify the existing finish
An unfinished wood deck, a stained deck and a painted deck can need different work. Include the wood species if known, the type of coating and whether it is intact, peeling or worn. Mention loose boards, splinters or damaged railings before arranging cleaning.
Our maintenance-cleaning service is separate from paint or solid-stain stripping. If you plan to apply a new finish afterward, explain that goal when requesting your estimate. Confirm the preparation required and the coating manufacturer’s drying instructions before scheduling the next step.
ProWood’s maintenance guidance addresses cleaning and protective finishes separately for its pressure-treated wood. Exposure to sun, moisture and nearby foliage affects maintenance needs; the guidance for your own wood and finish should inform the plan.
Composite decks: the product line matters
Provide the decking brand and product line if you have them, plus any different material used for the railings or stairs. If the product is unknown, mention that in your request rather than assuming every composite deck can be cleaned the same way.
Trex’s care guide distinguishes newer product lines from early-generation decking. For example, it advises against pressure washing its early-generation products. The instructions for the actual decking product matter more than a general label such as “composite.”
What should the estimate cover?
- Area: approximate deck size, number of levels and the sections to include.
- Details: railings, balusters, steps and any surfaces beneath the deck; specify which need cleaning.
- Condition: leaf marks, food spills, green buildup, old coatings and any previous cleaning treatments.
- Access: gates, stairs, furniture, planters, landscaping and an outside water connection.
Describe your deck and cleaning goals in the quote form’s Description of Work field. Ask which marks the proposed work is intended to address and what you should move before the visit.
Planning other exterior cleaning?
List any fence cleaning or driveway and patio cleaning separately so the estimate identifies each surface. Structural repairs, a new stain and sealing should not be assumed to be included in a cleaning quote.
